The Rice County Communications Center issues control burn permits under the authority of the Rice County Fire Chief. Permission to burn is obtained the day of the burn. Contact the Rice County Communications Center at 620-257-2363
prior to setting fire. Permission to burn is determined by weather and the fire grassland danger index and may change during the day. During certain weather conditions a "permit number" may not be issued. The Rice County Communications Telecommunicator will take down basic information such as what is being burned, location of the burn, and contact information for the person conducting the burn. If burning is allowed, the telecommunicator will issue a "permit number" to burn at that location.
Burn ignition is not allowed two hours or less before sunset until one hour after sunrise. Wind speeds must be less than 15 mph, the fire must be attended at all times, and it must be out by dark.
